A new exhitbion highlights the links between race, colonialism, and climate change

On the island of Vieques, Puerto Rico, a scattering of palm bushes populate the panorama. From 1941 to 2003, the US army used the island for naval workout routines, and bushes had been planted to behave as markers for hazardous waste disposal websites, now described as “conservation zones”. For artists Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla, those bushes symbolise one thing each observed and unseen throughout the Global South: an atmosphere in peril.
